Sound waves transfer energy but not the matter as it only transfers sound via air but not move the matter i. e. the air particles.

    Explanation:

Sound waves usually longitudinal waves which passes through the medium containing matter. They are just a disturbance occurred by the energy contained in a particle which is transferred to the other particle of the matter disrespected of its state. The disturbance creates vibrations in the medium and the energy moves in the same direction.

For example, when the doorbell rings, the sound produced by the clapper strikes the bell and the sound vibrations are generated. These vibrations influence the stationary air particles which tend to vibrate in the same or lower frequency. Now, this vibrating air particle influences another particle and reaches our ear. Hence, it's only the energy that travels nit the matter whose constituent particles vibrates at their position.
