Pistons are found inside the combustion cylinder which is used to compress the fuel in order to burn the fuel and run the engine. The piston is connected to the connecting rod which is in turn connected to the crankshaft. The pistons produces translatory motion for the rotary motion of the crankshaft.

Thus it is the movable part of the combustion unit. Pistons are generally made up of aluminium alloy for its excellent thermal conductivity properties and also for its light weight characteristics.

Thus the chips found in the oil sump are likely to be the broken chips of aluminium piston skirts.
