A wheel of diameter 138 cm has an axle of diameter 9 cm. A force 120 N is exerted along the rim of the wheel. What force should be applied to the outside of the axle in order to prevent the wheel from rotating? Assume the direction of this force to be tangential to the axle. Answer in units of N.

    The axle is the shaft that the wheel is mounted on

    The force applied to the rim of the wheel produces a torque = force * distance = 120N * 1.38m (Nm)

    The torque applied to the axle must balance this, therefore the force = 120N * 1.38/0.09

    =1840N
