As a protest against the umpire's calls, a baseball pitcher throws a ball straight up into the air at a speed of 23.0 m/s. In the process, he moves his hand through a distance of 1.10 m. If the ball has a mass of 0.150 kg, find the force he exerts on the ball to give it this upward speed.

    Explanation:

    F = m g + m a


    average speed in hand = (23 + 0) / 2 = 11.5 m/s

    
time in hand = 1.1 m / 11.5m/s = 0.097seconds



    a = change in speed / time in hand

    = 23/0.097 = 273.11 m/s^2



    F = 0.15 (9.8 + 273.11) = 42.44 N
