A double-slit interference experiment is performed with blue-green light from an argon-gas laser. The separation between the slits is 0.50 mm, and the first-order maximum of the interference pattern is at an angle of 0.059° from the center of the pattern. What is the wavelength of argon laser light, in nanometers?

    The angular position of first order maximum = λ / d where λ is wavelength and d is slit separation

    .059⁰ = (π / 180) x. 059 radian

    = 1.02922 x 10⁻³ radian.

    Given

    1.02922 x 10⁻³ = λ / d

    λ = d x 1.02922 x 10⁻³

    =.5 x 10⁻³ x 1.02922 x 10⁻³

    =.51461 x 10⁻⁶ m

    = 514.61 x 10⁻⁹ m

    = 514.61 nm.
