Determine the amount of work (in J) done on an ideal gas as it is heated in an enclosed, thermally isolated cylinder topped with a freely moving piston. The cylinder contains 0.240 mol of the gas and the temperature is raised from 15.0°C to 270°C. The piston has a mass of 8,300 g and an area of 5.50 cm2.

work done on an ideal gas, PV = - nRT

since the pressure is constant PΔV = - nRT

    where n, number of moles = 0.240 mol, R, gas constant = 8.314 J/mol K

    work done = - nR (T₂ - T₁) = 0.24 mol * 8.314 (270 - 15) = - 508.8 J
