action vessel is surrounded by water that must be added for each experiment. Since the amount of water is not constant from experiment to experiment, the mass of water must be measured in each case. The heat capacity of the calorimeter is broken down into two parts: the water and the calorimeter components. If a calorimeter contains 1.28 kg water and has a total heat capacity of 10.53 kJ/°C, what is the heat capacity of the calorimeter components? The specific heat capacity of water is 4.18 J/g°C

    5.179 kJ/°C

    Explanation:

Mass of water in the calorimeter, m = 1.28 kg = 1280 grams

    Heat capacity of the calorimeter, h = 10.53 kJ/°C. = 10.53 * 10³ J/°C

specific heat capacity of the water, C = 4.18 J/g°C

    also,

Total Heat capacity of the vessel = heat capacity of the calorimeter + heat capacity of the water

on substituting the values, we get

    10.53 * 10³ J/°C = Heat capacity of the calorimeter + mC

    or

    Heat capacity of the calorimeter = (10.53 * 10³ J/°C) - (1280 * 4.18 J/g°C)

    or

    Heat capacity of the calorimeter = 5179.6 J/°C = 5.179 kJ/°C
