The measure of certain level of ionizing radiation present in the environment at any location which is not introduced due to any deliberate measures, is known as Background Radiation.

The primary contributors of Background radiation are as follows:

    1. Natural background radiation:

    - Cosmic Radiation

    - Radioactive materials present naturally such as Uranium, Thorium, their decay products such as Radium and Radon.

    - Isotopes of Potassium (potassium - 40) and Carbon (carbon - 14) present inside the human body

    2. Artificial background radiation:

    - Atmospheric Nuclear testing

    - Occupational exposure (Medical radiation or in the vicinity of a nuclear facility)
