    The trip was 434mph quicker.

    Explanation:

    Time taken for case 1 = distance / time = 2000/400 = 5hrs

    Time taken in case 2 = distance / time = 2000/480 = 4.2hrs

    Time taken for the entire journey = 5 + 4.2 = 9.2hrs

    Total distance = 2000 + 2000 = 4000miles

Total speed = total distance / total time

    Total speed = 4000/9.2 = 434.78mph
