    The distance is (3.3m + 5.7m) = 9 meters

    The displacement = (3.3m south) + (5.7m north) = 2.4 meters north

The distance is 9.0 meters because that's how far the person ran. The displacement is 2.4 meters North because displacement is a speed AND direction. Basically you're calculating how far you are from where you started.
