Consider the issue of access to public restrooms for people who are transgender. One side of the debate involves genuine safety issues for transgender individuals. For example, a person who was born with male physiology but who now identifies as female, dresses as a female, and who may have undergone hormonal and surgical treatments to become physically female, may be at risk in using a restroom designated for men only. The other side of the debate involves concerns about sharing a public restroom with a transgender individual whose sexual characteristics at birth are the opposite of those for whom the public restroom is intended. The issue is obviously very emotionally charged. As this issue continues to be discussed, what role might psychologists play in educating people about their concerns?
