Discuss your understanding of the forces that are part of the filtration and abs portion seen in capillary beds. I full credit answer will define each force, the direction that force, and an explaination of how filtration and absorption are driven by the combination of the four forces involved.

    Answer: filtration is the separation of liquid from undisolved solid particles.

    Absorption is the process in which liquid molecules move into a porous medium.

    Absorption and filtration in capillary bed is governed largely by capillary forces, gravity force, drag force and pressure force.

    Capillary force is the force responsible for the upwards movement of water through tubes of very small diameter. Capillary forces act upwards.

    Gravity force is force due to the weight of the liquid towards the earth. Gravity forces cause liquid to shear which brings about flow of liquids. Gravity forces act downwards.

    Drag forces resist flow of fluid. This force is analogous to frictional force in solids. It's direction is usually in opposition to the direction of fluid flow.

    Pressure force arise as a result of difference in pressure within the fluid or the ambient pressure This force causes movement towards the the location with the lesser pressure.

    Filtration through bed can be as a combined result of shear (gravity) forces, capillary and pressure force, and all the other forces are resisted by drag forces. Same goes for absorption which is largely due to capillary forces.
