Two coils, 1 and 2, are separated in space, and have a fixed distance between them. When coil 2 has no current and the current in coil 1 increases at the rate of 24.0 A/s, the emf in coil 2 is 30.0 mV. What is their mutual inductance, M

    Mutual Inductance: This is the inductance that is setup between two coils with their flux having a linkage. The S. I unit of mutual inductance is Henry (H)

    Using,

    E₂ = Mdi₁/dt ... Equation 1

    Where E₂ = emf in the second coil, M = Mutual inductance, di₁/dt = rate of current increase in coil 1.

    Given: E₂ = 30 mV = (30/1000) V = 0.03 V, di₁/dt = 24 A/s.

    Substitute into equation 1

    0.03 = 24 (M)

    M = 0.03/24

    M = 1.25*10⁻³ H.

    Hence the mutual inductance, M = 1.25*10⁻³ H.
