An electromagnet is a device consisting of a coil of wire (generally with several turns) wrapped around an iron core.

The electromagnet is connected to a power supply, which provides a voltage, and therefore a current flows through the coil; as a result, a magnetic field is produced in the space around the coil, and inside it. In particular, the iron core is responsible for strengthening the magnetic field, since it is generally made from a ferromagnetic material. In a ferromagnetic material, the domains of the atoms orient in the same direction as the magnetic field, so that there is an increase in the strength of the field.

When the power supply is disconnected, current stops flowing, and the magnetic field disappears.

An electromagnet can be used for several purposes: for example, at home, it can be verifiied that an electromagnet is able to attract several paper clips.
