You can take saltwater, remove dissolved minerals from it, and make it suitable

for agriculture and for human consumption.

So, with half of Earth covered in salt water, you wouldn't think that almost half

the population of the planet lacks access to safe drinking water.

The reason that the desalination and purification of sea water is not more

widespread is that it takes a lot of energy ... which is NOT something that

everybody on Earth has access to.

A few of the countries most active in technological innovation have developed

advanced methods of large scale desalination of sea water. Perhaps the most

noteworthy is Israel, with its leadership in modern science and technology, its

position in a part of the world where water supply is a constant problem, and

the critical need for water among its own population and the population of its

neighbors ... to several of whom Israel supplies fresh water.

You cannot "convert" salt water to fresh water, but you can desalinize the water and make it safe for drinking.
