The environmental conditions that can cause damage to the alveolar sacs is dust storms, air pollution such as smoke and heavy smog. They can cause permanent or temporary damage to the alveolar sacs ranging from buildup of fluid in the sacs to accumulation of particles which cause coughing and prevention of air supply into the lungs. Long term exposure could also lead to cancer.
