All ions are not necessarily made of one type of atom for instance OH - has Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms in it so they can be made of two or more types of atom but this is NOT true for all ions. They however must have only one overall charge, though the parts of the ion may have different charges the overall charge of the complete ion will be one.

The answer is they have one overall charge. An atom or a molecule which total number of electrons and total numbers of protons are not equal is called an ion. All ions are charged. They are attracted to opposite electrical charges like all other charged objects.
