    As pressure on the body increases, body tissues and fluids are more able to absorb nitrogen gas.

    As pressure returns to 1atm, the dissolved gas must come out of solution. If the diver surfaces too quickly, the dissolved gas expands so rapidly that it does not get removed from the blood and tissues by respiration in the lungs before it forms bubbles. Its is those bubbles that create the condition known as The Bends.
