It takes the radio signal 12 minutes to go to Mars and back. Assuming Mars is in the closer position in relation to Earth; how fast is the signal traveling?

    The last known closest approach or distance between these two planets was only 56 million kilometers. The speed is calculated by dividing the distance by the time. Since, the total trip took about 12 minutes, it means that one-way will take only 6 minutes. Therefore, the speed of the signal is,

    speed = 56 million km / 6 minutes

    = 9.33 million km/minute
