Densities of phases of water experience an anomalous trend as the density of water decreases as it changes its phase from liquid to solid. Usually, for any substance, its density increases when it changes from liquid to solid as particles come closer and object becomes more compact, occupies less volume with same amount of matter. However, as water changes into ice (solidifies), it expands and becomes less dense. This allows for ice to float on surfaces of water bodies, and this is known as anomalous property of water.
