Why can a batter hit a pitched baseball farther than a ball tossed in the air by the batter?

Because a batter has more force then a thrower.

The wall wouldn't move, but the baseball bounces back in the opposite direction. That is because the energy is transferred back into the ball because the wall doesn't give that energy anywhere to go. Same thing with a baseball bat moving in the opposite direction of the incoming pitch.
