The appropriate answer is seafloor spreading. This occurs were two oceanic plates drift apart. This is a divergent plate boundary. Convection currents in the mantle cause plates to pull apart. As plats pull apart, magma upwells and cools. As it cools new land or oceanic lithosphere is formed. An example of seafloor spreading occurs ath the Mid Atlantic Ridge.
