The elastic potential energy stored in a spring is

(1/2) (spring constant) (distance of stretch) ²

    = (1/2) (7.7 N/m) (16.08 m) ²

    = (3.85 N/m) (258.57 m²)

    = 995.5 N-m

    = 995.5 joules
