It is much easier to slice a piece of pie with the edge of a sharp knife than with the edge of a pencil. explain this in terms of applied pressure.

Pressure is the force applied per unit of area perpendicular to the force. For the pencil, the surface area is lesser which means more force is required to cut the pencil. At the same pressure, it will require lesser force for the pie to be cut since it has larger area.
