    In the solar system Earth is the third closest planet to the Sun after Mercury and Venus. It is at a distance of 149.6 million kilometers from the Sun. Earth's closest neighbors are Venus and Mars. Venus is similar in size and structure to earth, has a toxic atmosphere and has surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead. Mars is half the diameter of Earth, and has very cold temperatures.
