The nucleus of an atom has a positive charge. The nucleus of an atom has two types of particles, protons and neutrons. Protons have a positive charge but the neutrons have no charge, therefore the nucleus has a net positive charge. The positive charge of the nucleus is balanced by the negative charge of the electrons. They are found in the periphery of the nucleus where they occupy energy shells or levels that surround the nucleus. Protons do not usually move anywhere, unlike electrons. Electrons can move from atom to atom. An atom is said to be neutral if it has equal numbers of protons and electrons.
