Ions are atoms with additional or missing electrons; thus, ions have distinct charges whether positive or negative. Extra electron is negative charge while missing electron is positive charge. Nitrate's is - 1. Carbonate is - 2. Ammonium's charge is + 1. Therefore, it should be NH4 + and not just NH4.
