Cite an example in which a force is exerted on an object without doing work on the object

    The classic example is pushing on a brick wall as hard as you can.

    No matter how hard you push on it, the wall is not going anywhere.

    Since

    Work = (force) x (distance),

    and

    distance = 0,

    it turns out that

    Work = (force) x (0) = 0.
