Refraction describes why a diamond ring will sometimes sparkle different colors in normal white light. As Newton had discovered before, white light is a mixture of the full color spectrum. When light is shone on the diamond (or in the case of another prism) at an angle, the light gets bent, and is refracted. When white light is refracted, the colors that make up the light can get separated.
