The physical state of an object is related to it's temperature which is a measure of it's average kinetic or thermal energy (energy due to the movement of molecules). Gases will have the highest thermal energy (temperature) and a solid will have the lowest thermal energy, and liquids have a thermal energy somewhere in between.
