What is the net magnetic force on a compass needle? By what mechanism does a compass needle align with a magnetic field?

    The net force on a compass needle is zero because it's north and south poles are pulled in opposite directions with equal forces in the Earth's magnetic field. The needle will align itself with the horizontal component of earths magnetic field.
