The velocity of sound in air at sea level is about 1100 ft/s. If a person hears a clap of thunder 4.00 s after seeing a lighning flash, how far is the lightning bolt?

    This is a simple formula Distance in feet = 1100 feet per second * seconds clap is heard after flash. Or D = 1100S. In this particular case, S equals 4, so we arrive at D = 1100 * 4, or 4400 feet.
