An earthquake 50km from a city produces P and S waves that travel outward at 5000 and 3000 m/s, respectively. Once city residents feel the shaking of the P wave, how much time do they have before the S wave arrives?

    The speeds are 5km/s and 3km/s. the P wave takes 50/5 = 10 s to arrive. the S wave takes 50/3 = 17 s to arrive (after rounding to 1 sig fig.) so the S wave arrives 7 seconds after the P wave
