If an airplane is flying directly north at 300.0 km/h, and a crosswind is hitting the airplane at 50.0 km/h from the east, what is the airplane's resultant velocity? (Use the graphical method to answer and include your scale on the graph paper.) Give both the magnitude and the angle in your answer.

    The magnitude of the resultant velocity is the square root of the sum of the squares of the given velocities,

    v = sqrt ((300 km/h) ² + (50 km/h) ²) = 304.1382 km/h

    For the angle A formed,

    tan A = 50 km/h / 300 km/h

    A = 9.46°

    Thus, the airplane travels at a velocity of 304.1382 km/h, 9.46° east of north.
