    I believe the answer is: memory consolidation

    Through the process of memory consolidation, we manage to stabilize the trace of our memory after initial acquisition of that memory.

    Which means that after this process we could distinguish the type of memory that we considered as facts / relevant and which type that we considered as fiction/irrelevant.
