King James tried to change the order of succession to make his son, also James, the next king instead of an older daughter. As James and his son were both Catholics, this was unacceptable to the elected representatives. King James tried to make a Catholic dynasty and the predominantly Protestant Parliament were having none of it. They facilitated William of Orange, a protestant, in overthrowing James. James being overthrown was the beginning of modern democracy. The Parliament and democracy won.
