I believe the answer is: Children adapt more easily to cultural differences than adults do.

As we grow up, the knowledge that we obtain through learning, observing, and our personal experiences tend to be crystallized deep in our memory.

This makes the grown ups tend to be really resistant to change and tolerate the differences that don't fit the schema in their head.
