The Enlightenment brought about several ideas from men like Locke, Hobbes, Blackstone, and Montesquieu. They examined the world and applied logic to explain why the world operated as it did. The idea of separation of powers, from Montesquieu, heavily influenced the creation of both the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. The fear of power being focused into one area as it had been and the rise of another dictator lead to the desire to separate power and making it harder for one person to take total control.
