    He is using Deviant Case type of sampling. In addition, this includes examining for and deliberating elements of the data that do not support or appear to controvert patterns or explanations that are emerging from data analysis. The deviant case analysis is a procedure for refining an analysis till it can give details or account for a mainstream of cases.
