What are three reasons the war was unpopular in the North? The South was not committed to coming to an agreement to end the war. The Union armies suffered defeat after defeat. Families were torn apart with no foreseeable end to the war. Many Northern soldiers were leaving and going to fight for the South. The death and maiming of thousands of young soldiers occurred month after month.
