men and women are more alike in their preferences in cultures that value gender equality: the theory suggests relationships and dating is taught and therefore in societies where gender is treated the same, each will react to dating in the same way.

The social learning theory states people learn their behaviors and preferences through institutions and members of society. Mate selection is then taught by society and men and women's roles in that process are prescribed by society.
