What do colonialism and imperialism both require

Both forms of exploration require large armies and naval forces, since both will be acting to take as much land as possible. When countries look to expand their influence into other nations or areas that they desire, having a large army will enable the country to subdue any people who might fight back would be a plus for the conquering nation.
