Why did most Greeks identify with their local community instead of Greece as a whole?

    There was no united Greece as we know today. The area that we today know as Greece was occupied by various city states, the best known being Athens.

    Because since greece was separated, they all thought they belonged to their individual city state instead of belonging to greece as a whole.
