    The first-person narrator talks about hearing the beating of old man’s heart; this sound leads him to kill the old man. He also describes his anger of the sound, so the readers try to think and discover the thoughts of the narrator.

    It only emphasizes the narrator’s insanity which was shown in the beginning of the story as well. These lines talk about the heartbeat he/she hears. Of course, sane people cannot hear other people’s heartbeat so that clearly demonstrates his/her deranged mental state.
