    Thomas Jefferson was only the third president, and his election in 1800 was the very first peaceful transfer John Adams' Federalists, to the opposition, Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans ... So, by Jefferson's own standards, the Louisiana Purchase was clearly unconstitutional.
