    I believe the answer is: use prayer and altered thinking to correct the causes of illness and disease

    We construct our perception on the things that happen to us based on our inherent belief. So, when a certain religion teach the followers that illness could be cured/altered by prayers, those followers would most likely see that getting better from an illness as a direct result from their prayers, even though it may caused by the medicine.
