    I believe the correct answer is red herring.

    Red herrings are often used in detective novels, for example. A writer wants to delude his or her readers by giving them false evidence in order to distract them from finding the actual truth. The red herring fallacy works in the same way - it makes the audience forget what the actual issue is.
