Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland--these states are referred to as the Border States and all were slave states that eventually chose to fight on the side of the Union.

Missouri actually split into two governments during the war over the issue of which side to support. West Virginia split from Virginia when they seceded and join the Confederacy. Delaware was surrounded by Union states and therefore saw no loyalty to the secession. Kentucky and Maryland were vital to the war effort both in their location and protection as well as resources.
