    After the US broke the legal treaty with Nez Perce in 1877 it was Chief Joseph (considered the highest leader of Nez Perce though he was not the only one) who led the tribe in a desperate attempt to avoid being moved to the reservation in Idaho. In the end, they were cornered by the US army and surrendered, while only being 40 miles away from the Canada border.
