Autism literally means selfness - "Autism is illogical and permits the greatest contradictions with the outer world and in itself." Separateness from reality. But autism occurs in "normal people" too.

    Explanation:

    That is how Autism was first described in 1980 by the psychiatric Eugen Bleuler. He used the term to refer to a schizophrenic patient that used to "retract in their own world".

    The word itself comes from Greek "autós", what means self (hence selfness). Also when he says "autism occurs in 'normal people' too" is referring to those who didn't suffer from schizophrenia.

    Today Autism is not considered a type of psychosis or schizophrenia, and Bleuler definition fell out of favor.
